 Teaching Philosophy

At the heart of my teaching is an understanding that all students need different approaches to learning the piano. Some students have more or less time to practice; some students are preparing for competitions of auditions while others are learning for their own self edification; meanwhile, each student is interested in varying repertoire styles, from classical, pop, jazz, and more. Understanding these needs and goals allow me to tailor a curriculum for each and every student.

I often tell my students that my main goal as a teacher is to give them skills that they can use on their own outside of piano lessons. That will allow them to reach their goals for a lifetime of music! These skills include: reading music, technical skills, and a natural physical approach to playing the piano. My students are given the opportunity to participate often in recitals and competitions. In addition, theory training is an optional choice for those wishing to advance their overall knowledge of music.

  • “Starting piano lessons for the first time as an adult, I was nervous, but Garret has been patient and encouraging. He is so skilled as a performer and a teacher, and I have learned so much about the mechanics of playing as well as musicality. He chooses pieces that are right for my level, but that are also interesting and beautiful classical music. I’m really enjoying my lessons and all the progress I’ve made!”
